Former Track Champ Gunning for Another Title at Concord
Racing is an addiction. Once you do it, no matter what happens you’ll always come back for more. Veteran car owner Kevin Hughes knows that all too well. Hughes himself took a couple years off from the car owning side of the racing business, but prior to that time he was one of the more successful car owners at Concord Motorsports Park. Today, Hughes Motorsports is announcing they will return to the full-time racing fold at the Concord, NC tri-oval in its NASCAR Whelen All American Pro Late Model Series division with Bobby Measmer Jr. behind the wheel.
The change to a straight-rail Late Model style car at the track prompted Hughes’ return to the car-owning ranks.
“I did not like the Late Model Stock format, it was too expensive and I’ve always enjoyed the true four-barrel (carburetor) car,” said Hughes, who works as Team Services Manager covering the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for Racing Electronics. “The problem was they (Late Model Stock Cars) were too expensive to race in the old format. The trend now is the crate motor program which significantly lowers your entry cost. This car is easier to maintain than a Late Model Stock. I also wanted to help out a kid that’s trying to race and doesn’t have a lot of sponsors and needed some help.”
That kid is Measmer, who is the 2007 Limited Late Model champion from Concord Motorsport Park. Prior to that, Measmer was a top-dog in the track’s entry level divisions. This past year, Measmer spent his time competing on the tough UARA-STARS Late Model Stock Series.
“Bobby is a good kid and he has worked hard,” explained Hughes. “He doesn’t have a lot of money and his team has always been supported by his family. I’ve watched him at the track and the way he carries himself; he’s not a guy who is always in a lot of drama. He’s what I like. He’s someone who is competitive, willing to work hard and doesn’t expect anything to be handed to him. He stays out of trouble, but he’s also competitive. And from a car owner’s standpoint, that’s what I want, someone who is aggressive but knows enough to take care of his own equipment. Bobby also carries himself well and that’s the image I want to project.”
Hughes Motorsports is now seeking marketing partners for the 2009 season at Concord Motorsport Park, but already has several associates already signed, including Racing Electronics, Pirtek Southend, Park South Groups, RE/MAX on the Lake with Patty Betts, Speed51.com, Brunnhoelzl Race Products, Nelson Specialties, BSR Shock Program, Simpson, ButlerBuilt Safety Products, FNO Race Cars, Schoenfeld Headers, Chico’s Bail Bonds and Motorsports Designs.
Hughes Motorsports is a former champion at Concord Motorsport Park in the Legends Division and a front-runner in what was called the track’s Big 10 Series (Super Late Models) and Limited Late Models with drivers Jimmy Simpson and Tab Boyd.
Although Hughes is originally from Maine, he fell in love with Concord Motorsport Park from the moment he moved south.
“Racing is in my blood, it’s what I’ve always done and while I do it for a living, I still like to go back to the grassroots racing where we all come from,” said Hughes, who travels to nearly every NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event. “I’m from New England, and Beech Ridge Motor Speedway (ME), a 1/3 mile oval and quite a different track that Concord. But I only live about three miles from Concord and the people there have been really good. I think they run a really good program. They’ve turned it around by adding this division and they are going in the right direction. They have a competitive track and a nice facility and we think with Bobby we can offer people the right package.”
Hughes Motorsports, with driver Bobby Measmer Jr. plan to compete for the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Pro Late Model division championship at Concord Motorsport Park in North Carolina in 2009. The team has already purchased and prepared a Port City Chassis Pro Late Model for the season. Racing is slated to begin in March and run through the beginning of October.

Kevin Hughes and his Hughes Motorsports team have seen plenty of success over the years and hope for further success in the Pro Late Model ranks.
